Fans During the Colder Months?

Believe it or not, fans can be used year-round to help with air circulation in your home, which successively helps save energy.
During the warmer months, switching the blades to rotate counter clockwise helps push cool air down to the floor which makes the room feel cooler. This may help eliminate or reduce the need for air conditioning.
In the cooler months, setting the blades to rotate clockwise helps push warm air upwards, making the room feel warmer.
Consider a few of these helpful tips when selecting a fan to ensure high performance:
1) Select the right fan size for the space
Depending on the size and height of your space, you may have to select a larger fan or use multiple fans in order to achieve the optimal results.
Begin by measuring the length and width of the room to determine the square footage and use the following chart as a general guideline:
small room (80 square feet or less) |
20-28” fan |
medium room (90-120 square feet) |
38-52” fan |
large room (125-300 square feet) |
52-56” fan |
great room (350-400 square feet) |
56-88” fan |
2) Making sure the fan will provide enough air-flow
Another important aspect to consider is the Cubic feet per minute (CFM) of a fan. CFM is a measurement of airflow and provides an indication of how much air the fan can move when it is at itshighest speed. Luckily, most manufacturers will list the CFM information for their fans.
Below is a general guideline for recommended CFM range for particular room sizes:
small room (80 square feet or less) |
1500-3500 CFM range |
medium room (90-120 square feet) |
3500-5000 CFM range |
large room (125-300 square feet) |
5000-8000 CFM range |
great room (350-400 square feet) |
7000-10000 CFM range |
Of course, there are other factors to consider when selecting a fan such as the height of your room, the motor of the fans, the compatibility of your current switch device, and so forth. These are factors that Lighting Specialist will often discuss with you in order to ensure you are selecting the right fan for your space.
